About St David's Lutheran Church

A Lutheran community in Cardiff, Wales

St David's Lutheran Church has been a faithful presence in Cardiff, Wales, serving our community with the unchanging message of God's grace. We are a congregation committed to the authority of Scripture and the Lutheran confessions.

Our church is rooted in the Lutheran tradition of liturgical worship, emphasising the centrality of Word and Sacraments in the life of faith. We believe in justification by grace through faith alone and seek to live out this truth in our worship, fellowship, and service to others.

Located in Fairwater, we welcome all who seek to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and desire to be part of a community that values both sound doctrine and genuine Christian love.

Our Mission

To faithfully proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, administer the Sacraments according to His institution, and provide pastoral care to our members and community, all while maintaining fidelity to the Word of God and the Lutheran Confessions.

The Three Solas

These three foundational principles summarise the heart of Lutheran theology and our understanding of salvation.

Sola Fide

By Faith Alone

We are justified before God by faith alone, not by our works or merits. Faith is the instrument by which we receive God's righteousness. This faith is not our own achievement but a gift from God, created by the Holy Spirit through the Gospel.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God" - Ephesians 2:8

Sola Gratia

By Grace Alone

Salvation comes entirely through God's unmerited favour and love. We contribute nothing to our salvation - it is completely God's work from beginning to end. Grace is God's undeserved kindness toward sinners, freely given through Christ.

"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us... made us alive together with Christ" - Ephesians 2:4-5

Sola Scriptura

Scripture Alone

The Bible is the sole and final authority for all matters of faith and Christian living. God's written Word is sufficient, clear, and reliable. While we value church tradition and reason, Scripture alone has divine authority to establish doctrine.

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" - 2 Timothy 3:16

Together They Proclaim

These three solas work together to declare that salvation is entirely God's work: He reveals Himself through Scripture alone, saves us by His grace alone, and we receive this salvation through faith alone. This is the heart of the Gospel that Martin Luther rediscovered and that we continue to proclaim today.

An Evangelical Church

As Lutherans, we are evangelical in the truest sense of the word - we are centred on the evangelion (Good News) of Jesus Christ. Our evangelical nature is not a modern innovation but flows directly from our Reformation heritage and our commitment to Scripture.

We believe in the necessity of personal faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, while also treasuring the means of grace - the Word of God, Baptism, and the Lord's Supper - through which the Holy Spirit works to create and sustain faith.

Our evangelical commitment means we actively proclaim the Gospel, calling all people to repentance and faith. We believe every Christian is called to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, both through word and deed.

We maintain the scriptural balance between God's law, which shows us our sin, and God's gospel, which proclaims forgiveness and new life in Christ. Ultimately, the gospel triumphs over the law in Christ Jesus, for where sin abounded, grace abounded much more. This law-gospel distinction is central to our evangelical proclamation.

Traditions Founded in Scripture

Baptism

We practice infant and adult baptism as commanded by Christ (Matthew 28:19). Baptism is a means of grace through which God washes away sin and grants new birth in the Holy Spirit.

Holy Communion

We celebrate the Lord's Supper as instituted by Christ (1 Corinthians 11:23-26), believing in the real presence of Christ's body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine.

Liturgical Worship

Our worship follows historic patterns rooted in Scripture, emphasising Word and Sacraments while using forms that have nourished Christians for centuries.

Pastoral Care

Following the New Testament model, we provide pastoral oversight, teaching, and care for souls, recognising the office of the ministry as divinely instituted.

"We teach that the church cannot be better governed and preserved than if we all live under one head, Christ, and all the bishops, equal in office (although they may be unequal in gifts), be diligently joined in unity of doctrine, faith, sacraments, prayer, and works of love."

- Augsburg Confession, Article XXVIII

What is the Gospel?

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16

1 The Problem: We Are All Sinners

The Bible teaches that all people have sinned and fallen short of God's perfect standard. Our sins separate us from God and deserve His righteous judgement. We cannot save ourselves through good works or religious efforts - we are utterly dependent on God's mercy.

2 God's Solution: Jesus Christ

In His great love, God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to earth. Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live and died the death we deserved to die. On the cross, He took upon Himself the punishment for all our sins, bearing God's wrath in our place.

3 Victory Over Death

Jesus didn't remain dead. On the third day, He rose from the grave, proving that His sacrifice was accepted by the Father and that He has power over sin and death. His resurrection guarantees our resurrection and eternal life for all who believe in Him.

4 A Free Gift Through Faith

Salvation is entirely a free gift from God - it cannot be earned, purchased, or deserved. We receive this gift simply by faith - trusting in Jesus Christ as our Saviour. When we believe, God forgives all our sins and declares us righteous in His sight.

The Good News

This is the Gospel - the good news that Jesus Christ has died for all people to wash away the sins of the world. Salvation is God's free gift, offered to everyone who believes. You don't need to clean up your life first or prove yourself worthy. Jesus has already done everything necessary for your salvation.

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8
